#InclusiveSTEM Presentations & Workshops

I am a scientist. Accordingly, I approach the challenges of diversity and equity in STEM like a scientist: by using data, data, data. Data are so powerful because they provides evidence-based ideas for finding solutions to this crisis of representation in STEM. The data I use are mostly drawn from the peer-reviewed social psychology literature. I do this because I want it to be better for the next generation of women. I think it is important for real scientists to discuss these issues, and as a tenured full professor, I recognize that I am in position of privilege in STEM. I choose to use my position to do something to make the STEM pipeline better. Also, it feeds my soul. I love talking about this stuff, because it’s so amazingly inspiring to collaborate with others to figure out how we can all be better.

Over the years, I have developed full-length seminars, socratic discussions as well as more interactive workshops. I’ve given talks at diversity/equity workshops, as “second” seminars when invited to visit universities to give a talk on my science, and at international conferences. These presentations are centered around the theme of nurturing a more inclusive STEM community, and they cover various topics (chosen based on the interests of the event/institution) including unconscious bias, climate vs culture, the gender gap manifested in confidence in women, sexual and gender harassment, bystander intervention, emotion in the workplace, stereotype threat, inclusive pedagogy and growth mindset to name a few.

My work in this area is part of my broader impacts efforts for my NSF funded research.
