Dec 3, 2014 Workshop: The Confidence Gap

Evidence shows that women are less self-assured that men and that – to succeed – confidence matters as much as competence

This is the third workshop on Achieving Gender Equity in Science for Fall 2014. The entire schedule can be found here.

In this meeting we will discuss the confidence gap that exists between men and women. Lack of self-confidence in women impedes their success in science. What is the source of this lack? How does it impede success? What can we do about it? The basis for this discussion will be an article in The Atlantic by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman. It will be helpful for the discussion to read this ahead of time.

Pizza and beverages will be served. If you think you will attend, RSVP Karen so she can order enough pizza. It would be a bummer if we ran out of pizza!

Please spread the word about these workshops.

NY Times: Academic Science Isn’t Sexist. Really?

14 Friday Nov 2014

On Halloween, the New York Times ran an opinion article entitled Academic Science Isn’t Sexist. This article essentially rejects the notion that academic science has a gender problem and that – when it does – “such incidences are largely anecdotal or overgeneralized from small studies”.

This sounds to me like they are dismissing the creeping normalcy of discrimination by a thousand little acts of bias.

There have been a number of reactions to the NY Times article at here, here, and in a Slate article entitled, “Don’t Worry Your Pretty Little Heads“.

These are all well worth reading.

What is Unconcious Bias? And What Can we All Do to Avoid Bias in our Professional Interactions?

This is the second workshop on Achieving Gender Equity in Science for Fall 2014. The entire schedule can be found here.

In this meeting we will discuss what it means to be biased. In preparation for the discussion, be sure to take a few minutes to test your self at ProjectImplicit to determine if you display bias or not.

Pizza and beverages will be served. If you think you will attend, RSVP Karen so she can order enough pizza. It would be a bummer if we ran out of pizza!

Please spread the word about these workshops. Here is a printable flyer for the November meeting 2014_1112_AchievingGenderEquityFlyer.
